One region of India that I visited while in that magnificent and vast country was the Sunderbans, a World Heritage-listed area that boasts mangrove swamps and tigers. My friends and I stayed in a village that allows just a few tourists at a time and we were proudly shown around the region by a local guide.
So many aspects of the Sunderbans captured my heart, from the beautiful children we met along the way to the waterways, fresh seafood and the wildlife. The local children were particularly curious about us, growing up as they do in mud huts without electricity or running water.
We travelled largely by boat, having the local seafood of fish and crabs cooked freshly for us for every meal. A highlight of the trip for me was my birthday, a day on which our guide took us looking for tigers! Although we came across fresh tracks, we didn’t spot any of these endangered creatures. Part of the rationale for tourism in the local area is to encourage the local people to develop another industry and protect their precious tigers from poaching, something which has traditionally been a means of eking out a living.
In all we spent four days in this remote and fascinating region. The most humbling part of the trip was to have a long conversation with our guide about what it is like to live in a rich nation like Australia. We had given him a large tip for looking after us so well, which would have represented many months’ salary for him. It was such a measly amount of money for us privileged westerners but would have made a great difference to the life of his family.
On returning from the Sunderbans we stayed in the bustling city of Kolkata, close to the amazing flower market with all its garlands of marigolds.
