For several years I was a resident of Melbourne, living in a lovely art deco apartment in the eastern suburbs. The apartment was part of a striking complex built in 1935. My apartment was a top-floor unit with its own stairway entrance and large balcony. For me it will always remain an unfinished project as I sold it to return to my hometown of Sydney when offered a job I couldn’t turn down. To this day I remain enormously fond of that little home and enjoy looking back on the photos I took when I lived there.
Although it was an apartment, it felt very private, thanks largely to the top-floor position and the fact that it had its own stairwell and entranceway. The apartment complex was set on such a large piece of land that it really did feel quite palatial. Everything about the apartment was original, from the basic bathroom and kitchen to the little wooden box for milk and bread delivery at the top of the back stairs.
I made the most of its art deco character by furnishing it with pieces from the period. My favourite piece from that time, which I still own and love to this day, is the pedestal dining table, which I searched long and hard for at Melbourne vintage dealers. It comes complete with six dining chairs, which I am looking forward to reupholstering in some fitting vintage fabric.

Another favourite find from trawling the vintage dealers of Melbourne was an art deco kitchen cabinet that had been exquisitely restored. It has become a wonderful place to store china and kitchen utensils, as well as my CD collection, and it’s amazing how much this beautiful cabinet holds.

One of the best things about this fabulous apartment was its proximity to Camberwell markets, which take place every Sunday in the car park behind the Camberwell shops. The markets are an enticing blend of vintage offerings and newer bits and pieces. Many’s the time I had my own stall there on a Sunday, off-loading clothing, books and furniture that were ready for a new home. I loved the sense of community that the market and Camberwell itself had and would always wander over there on a Sunday morning for a rummage and a freshly baked donut or two.

Another favourite Art Deco piece of furniture that I still own is a striking and unusual buffet, with beautiful carved flowers adorning the door handles. This is another useful and beautiful piece of storage and keeps all manner of day-to-day objects out of sight.
Soon I will make a trip to Melbourne for a long weekend to visit my second home and my old stomping ground. I have such fond memories of life in Melbourne, of its laneways, cafes, wide boulevards and trams and its friendly atmosphere. Time to get back this appealing city to soak up its winter delights and grandeur.
