Going solo in Tahiti, island of honeymooners, is not for the fainthearted. I stopped over in Tahiti for a few days on my way home from New York and seemed to be the only single person in this gorgeous archipelago. That’s not to say I wasn’t thrilled to be there. Growing up in the seventies, Tahiti has always been associated with the height of luxury, thanks to the Cussons Imperial Leather soap ad where a couple in a private jet decide that ‘Tahiti looks nice’ and instruct the pilot of their private jet to head for Tahiti.
And indeed it is idyllic. I didn’t venture to any of the other islands, but had a lovely few days in Tahiti itself, luxuriating at a resort. So what is there to do in this island paradise apart from loaf about on a sun lounge? Well, there are the obvious choices like swim and enjoy other water sports such as snorkelling and diving, as well as sampling some of the scrumptious local seafood fare. There are also the obligatory pearl merchants to visit and the Gauguin museum. Sadly, at the time I visited, the Gauguin museum was rather lacking in the one type of item that should really be considered essential for a museum on Gauguin: some of his original works. To give them their due, they are probably operating on a shoestring and unable to afford the multi-million-dollar price tag for one of his masterpieces.
There are many examples of the beautiful frangipani tree to be seen dotted all around the island and gorgeous fragrant body oils made from some of the local flora make an unusual and rather luxurious souvenir.
Most of all what I loved about Tahiti was the relaxed atmosphere combined with that wonderful French ‘je ne sais quoi’ and the time to laze around and soak up some sun and fresh seaside air. I’ll be back in this stunning part of the world before too long.
