Dressing for autumn, especially Sydney’s autumn weather at the moment, is really tricky. The humidity is still very high so ostensibly it’s still summer, but when you work in an airconditioned office (for which I am very grateful, don’t get me wrong!) it’s too chilly not to add a layer. So how do you best dress for these transeasonal times?
I’ve found that the old gem of layering is the answer, adding a thin layer of clothing to your outfit will get you by in the office. My approach to this is to adopt the short kimono, or half kimono, which is like wearing a very light jacket. There are some striking ones to be picked up second-hand and a colleague of mine has managed to adapt a few of the genuine vintage article. The kimono hides a multitude of sins if you’ve packed on a few kilos too! There are no uncomfortable waistbands to contend with.
Another clever approach is to wear an Indian wrap or shawl. I picked up a couple of beautiful cashmere shawls on my trip to India. They are so soft against the skin and very versatile.
What’s become known as the ‘editorial cardie’ or cardigan is a favourite way to beat the office chill at my workplace. A silky soft example with some lovely vintage buttons always works a treat and can be left draped over your chair rather than taken home each day.
Another excellent option for autumn layering is to wear a cape. The best ones leave your arms free and so offer a great deal of freedom of movement and comfort. I have a favourite See by Chloe cape that is black and adorned with quite a few small zips. It looks so 80s that I love it, but also channels 60s style. It’s incredibly smart and looks chic styled up or down for a formal look or a more relaxed and casual style.
