My parents’ wedding photos are among our family’s most treasured items. The images of my mother and father, so obviously in love and deliriously happy, bring more than a tear to my eye. The photos of their wedding day at Hampstead Registry Office in February 1967 depict my mother in bright yellow woollen frock and dress-coat, a lovely spray of stunning orchids matching her red hair. My father looks lovingly into her eyes. He is wearing a Beatle-esque suit with narrow black tie and sporting a Fab Four haircut. He looks so handsome.
The ‘after-party’ was a simple and cosy affair, held in the tiny attic apartment my parents lived in. My mother stares in wonder as one of her friends places a red bow on her head that must have bedecked a wedding gift. Confetti remains scattered over my mother’s hair. It is a gorgeous image of a young woman embarking on a great adventure.
A friend poses teasingly with a napkin draped across her face like an eastern princess. Other artistically blurry images tell of an exciting time that held great promise for these young people in one of the most vibrant urban metropolises of the time.
With the passing of my father last month, these cherished images are all the more poignant for us. What happened to the years? I think it is these photos among others from the period that inspired my love of sixties fashion and style. It’s partly the clothes themselves, the style, but also the happiness that radiates from the photos that conjure up joyful days. There was a world of possibilities before them as they faced a new life together.
Half a world away and some two years later, there are more photos of my mother with an addition to the family, my brother, sitting down to Christmas lunch with my grandparents and my father’s younger siblings. My brother is all of about 12 months old and happily the centre of everyone’s attention. He giggles and smiles as my mother looks on, her beehive hairdo towering over her head. Happy days indeed.
Who could not be enchanted by such golden images of a young family’s life? I’d love to be able to travel back in time and be a fly on the wall at that happy occasion, to listen in on the conversations and my mother’s London accent before she largely lost the English twang.
