Isn’t every woman obsessed with shoes? Well no; I might be a rare bird, but my particular obsession is vintage jackets, which, I believe, you can just never have too many of. But shoes maketh the man—or woman, or so says my mother. Mum has often chided me for having less-than-fabulous shoes. Her father used to make the time to polish and care for the shoes of his ten children. Perhaps he was naturally fastidious or was it the habit of being in uniform in the British airforce during World War II? Whatever the reason, Grandad was onto something there. Shoes that are well cared for, polished and cleaned to within an inch of their lives, really do make an outfit.
The trouble is I spend my hard-earned cash on terrific vintage clothing and have nothing left for shoes so have to skimp on cheap throwaway numbers from China. But not anymore. Those days are over. Now I’m aiming to have well-made and comfortable shoes. The kind that I’m not embarrassed to be seen in. Not exactly Jimmy Choos or Christian Louboutins, but something I won’t have to shamefully hide under the table.
I do actually possess some quite lovely pairs of vintage shoes. My guilty secret? They don’t all fit me but are just too gorgeous to part with …
Shoes that Dorothy would be proud to wear
So what is it that makes a woman obsessed with shoes? It’s not usually the comfort factor that leads a woman to long for a new pair of Louboutins, although for all I know they might be very comfortable indeed. I think it must at least in part be the craftsmanship. I’m sure that’s not the whole story though. Are you a shoe-obsessed woman? If so, perhaps you can post a comment to explain what it is about shoes that you love so much.
Maybe the reason I’ve missed the point where the shoe fixation is concerned is that for me it is really challenging to find shoes that are comfortable, the kind that I can wear all day and that fit me like a glove. So rarely have I possessed a pair of shoes like that I’ve come to believe they no longer exist. So the search for the perfect pair of shoes is underway. I’m aiming to find a pair of attractive shoes that are amazingly comfortable and can be worn all day to work, including all the walking that that entails.
I might not grasp the full picture on shoes but I do have a bit of a thing about boots. I once had a pair of pointy suede pixie boots and I was quite keen on them, so much so that I wore them into the ground, quite literally. Now they were comfortable and very swish. I wore them to work quite a lot, which is probably why they came to wear out all too soon. I was so fond of those pointy boots that I’ve kept them in my closet, with the thought that I might find a bootmaker who could make a pair just like them. Alas, my budget doesn’t currently stretch to handmade boots! Perhaps one day …
Yes! Shoes! I get it. I don’t get clothes (you’ve known me long enough to know how true that is), but shoes, definitely. The appeal, I think, is that a good pair of shoes gives you confidence. I resent nearly every cent I spend on clothes but I can always justify a new pair of shoes. xx
