Cycling in the French countryside

On my trips to France I have enjoyed not just the gorgeousness that is Paris but also explored some of the countryside. The French really know how to make the best of their nation’s natural beauty. They don’t litter the countryside with countless signs and they seem to take pride in their towns which are sometimes stupidly picturesque.

I have had the good fortune to cycle in the Lot Valley, to explore Provence and to visit a number of the chateaux of the Loire. In the spring and the summer, everywhere you go there are fields of wildflowers such as poppies and it’s really difficult not to constantly stop to take photos!

The Lot Valley really is stunning. Village after village that you come across is beautifully maintained and ridiculously scenic. Cycling from one village to another really grants you the opportunity to drink in the natural beauty. There are countless gently cycle paths in this region and if you plan well, you can avoid a lot of steep hills. It helps if you are on an organised cycle tour where the tour leader will drive you up the steepest slopes!

Nothing could be finer than a morning taking in the scenery as you whizz by on your bicycle and then stopping in one of the lovely towns for a well-earned dejeuner. It’s amazing how many kilometres you can cover in a day without over-stretching yourself. And if you can return to a delicious homemade three-course meal in the evening, all the better!

Yours truly cycling in France

One of the hazards of cycling is a sore rear end. It doesn’t take too many hours in the saddle to become quite uncomfortable, so it’s worth investing in a bit of extra padding on your seat! Getting back on the bike the day after a long ride is punishment indeed if you haven’t benefited from a bit of extra cushioning.
