India is a nation that really gets under your skin. My three-week trip there with three friends was one of the most wonderful and memorable experiences of my life. We travelled from Delhi to Rajasthan, including Jaipur and Pushkar, then on to Udaipur, Varanasi, Darjeeling, Kolkata and the Sunderbans region.

So what is it about India that is so fascinating? It’s a vast nation with very varied culture. It’s also an incredibly stunning country. And the people are among the most beautiful people I have encountered. It’s a nation of colour, history and heritage.

A visit to the Taj Mahal was one of the many highlights of the trip. Arriving at dawn, we watched in wonder as the stunning structure slowly emerged from the morning fog, the sun dazzling on the white tiles. It really is the most beautiful building I have ever seen.

Everywhere we went people were curious about us and welcoming and didn’t mind having their photos taken. So many photogenic people and so little time! The children were particularly inquisitive and eager to be captured digitally.

Udaipur is an incredibly picturesque city and a place where the children were out on the dusty streets and engaging with us at every opportunity. Whether playing cricket or simply striking a pose from their doorway, the children of Udaipur captured my heart.

Around every corner there was something worth encountering, from the confronting to the sublime, India has it all.

The contrast between Darjeeling and the rest of India that I visited was stark and an interesting one. The proximity to Tibet is evident everywhere in Darjeeling, from the lack of beggars in the streets to the much cooler climate, Darjeeling was a welcome relief. We even enjoyed snow there, stopping for a snowball fight during a steam train ride.
A visit to a tea factory was, of course, on the agenda. We enjoyed having to learn the very long name of the finest flush of Darjeeling tea, ‘Super tippy ….’ and there my memory fails me!

Perhaps my favourite image from the trip was a moment captured at a palace in Delhi where a young couple sought refuge in the shade. When I came across them they were perfectly framed in a stunning window screen.

In my experience it’s impossible to come away from India unchanged. It’s a massive growing economy but in many ways a trip to India is like stepping back in time. One day I dearly hope to return to explore further and revisit favourite spots. I’d love to head back to Udaipur when there’s water in the city’s lake and the Lake Palace is reachable only by boat. I also wouldn’t miss an opportunity to revisit the Taj Mahal, truly one of the great wonders of the world.
