I have a secret to disclose … My wardrobe is a disgrace. It’s jam-packed and overflowing and really is no way to store beautiful vintage garments. It’s true that I long for a custom-designed walk-in closet, with luxurious cabinets and the best of shelving and coat hangers, so much so that I have a board on Pinterest with hundreds of examples of dream closets ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. There are those that seemingly take up a whole floor of an apartment, where the closet doors stretch on down a long corridor. Then there are the elaborate dressing rooms, complete with chaise longues, for ease of putting on stockings and shoes. They all seem to be equipped with enough shelves, drawers and shoe compartments to satisfy even Imelda Marcos. I have dreams about beautiful closets, where the drawers all open smoothly with a gentle swooshing sound.
But I digress. Back to my deplorable closet. My groaning wardrobe is a relic from the twenties—a beautiful carved wooden armoire that was built for a time when people didn’t possess many clothes. It’s true that it is rather handsome and has a full-length bevelled mirror, but the hanging space is narrow and cramped, not designed for the wide modern hanging devices we use now. I’ve even resorted to hanging my clothes on children’s hangers so that I can close the doors, and even then they have to be coaxed and persuaded, with the garments arranged in exactly the right way. They all seem to be competing to escape its confines. Truly it’s an ongoing battle between me and my closet.
Of course, it’ll come as no surprise that I have sketched plans for a beautiful built-in wardrobe with ample hanging space and shelving for bags, shoes and hats. In my imagination it will have broad sliding doors with large art-deco-inspired handles, wide draws that slide smoothly, with space for luggage and my sixties hat collection. I long for the time when I can have it purpose-built by a gifted cabinetmaker.
Only a girl whose clothes suffer a similar fate to mine can understand the extent of my longing for the perfect closet. Are you such a girl? Perhaps you’re one of the lucky ones who has scrimped and saved to install her own dream closet or move to an apartment or house with a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room. Only such a girl can fully appreciate the joy that the transition to a grown-up closet can create. The sense of order that a well-designed closet would impose would transform my life. Imagine for a moment that all your everyday and best garments have their own special place where they hang in a colour-coordinated fashion, according to their category (dress, shirt, skirt, trousers, jeans …), a place where the air circulates around them and no moths can dine out on the fabric. Drawers are devoted to socks and underwear, lingerie and scarves. Rows of tiny down lights illuminate the garments so there’s no need to rummage blindly to retrieve that particular little black dress.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to have your own little area of the house devoted to your collection, a dressing room fit for a Hollywood fashion maven, where garments are lovingly displayed without the need to vie for attention. Shoes and boots would nestle in their very own compartments, not shoved unceremoniously in a heap beneath the coats and frocks in a horrible muddle. Scarves would be tucked away in a drawer that glides effortlessly open.
